You can protect your investment, prolong the life of your carpet, and improve the quality of your indoor environment by establishing a regular maintenance schedule.

Your carpet is constantly subject to an accumulation of dust mites, pet and human dander. In addition, daily soil and moisture deposits tracked in build up quickly over time.

The tendency is to notice only the deposits that change the appearance of the carpet. Regular vacuuming is, of course, very important and should be done once a week. Even though vacuuming can remove a lot of the dry soil, it cannot remove the organic material that has settled in the fibers.

If you have pets or children, your carpets should be steam cleaned at least twice a year. If done correctly, you cannot over clean your carpets.

Truck mounted units are the most powerful and get the best results. They use a hot water extraction system, also called steam cleaning. The reason the truck mount is the most effective is that rinsing is under high pressure and extraction is with high lift. The process consists of spraying a solution of water and detergent onto the carpet allowing it to loosen the soil. It is then simultaneously rinsed and extracted, quickly removing both soil and residual moisture from the carpet.

Where access is impossible, portables which, when powered by two motors, can provide high pressure and adequate lift. These are recommended in secured buildings where truck mounts cannot be used.

We at DeepVac have been caring for your carpets in the San Francisco Bay area for 20 years utilizing biodegradable carpet cleaning products. We also use products which are organic, non-toxic, and biodegradable for housecleaning and carpet care.

These products are certified by three separate organizations:

Green Seal certification is given to products which meet the environmental standards for industrial and institutional cleaners.

Envirodesic certifies for maximum indoor air quality and use for environmentally hypersensitive individuals. This certification requires products which have low aquatic toxicity and biodegrade readily.

Environmental Choice certification is given to organic products that meet Canada’s environmental criteria. These include products which are biodegradable and have low toxicity.

We at DeepVac see carpet problems every day. In fact, over 20 years, we’ve probably seen it all! We’d like to share some of our top tips for carpet headaches. Let us know if you find these useful by leaving a comment below!

Spills?

Most spills are protein based. Remove debris then blot the spill with a dry or damp white towel and warm water as soon as possible before the stain has a chance to set. Be sure to blot up spills of decaffeinated coffee quickly. The decaffeination process removes the color from the beans and they have to be re-dyed coffee color. This dye is resistant to removal the longer it sets and may even be permanent. You can try a tannin removal product. Depending on how long the spill has been there, it may work to remove the stain.

Red Stains?

Food coloring is usually the cause. Most janitorial and carpet cleaning supply stores carry “Red Stain Remover”. Use a wet white towel and a steam iron to treat the stain.

Water Soluable Stains?

Absorb as much as possible with white towels. Blot the stained area with more white towels and cool water until there is no more transfer of the stain onto the towels. If any of the stain remains, use a mild solution of liquid detergent (no more than a quarter teaspoon of detergent to one quart of water). A clear, non-bleach liquid dishwashing detergent such as Dawn, Joy, or clear Ivory is recommended. Do not use detergents that are cloudy or creamy because they can leave a sticky residue which will attract dirt. Rinse thoroughly by spraying with clean water using a trigger/pump sprayer. Blot as dry as possible.

Rust Stains?

Carpet cleaning and Janitorial supply stores have a product called “Rust Stain Remover”. It works like a charm.

Furniture Stains?

Use a wood stain removal product available at a carpet cleaning or janitorial supply store. These can be effective.

Pet Urine?

Pet stores, carpet cleaning and janitorial supply houses carry Enzyme Cleaners. Keep some handy and treat right away to avoid odor problems.

Cat/Dog scratches, holes or burn spots?

A patch of carpet can usually be taken from the closet to patch the damaged area.

Bumps in your carpet?

Lumps and bumps can cause trip and fall injuries and maybe lawsuits. They can easily be removed by restretching. You will need to call a carpet specialist. They have the correct equipment such as power stretchers. Don’t let anybody restretch your carpet with a “knee kicker”. It doesn’t have the torque necessary to do the job.

Are you replacing your carpets in your rental units too often due to indelible stains and spills?

Mohawk leads innovation in sustainable flooring with SmartStrand® carpet with DuPont™ Sorona® renewably sourced polymer. In partnership with DuPont, this carpet exclusively offers fiber made with bio-Pdo™ (the key Sorona® ingredient), which is produced from corn sugar. By utilizing this new ingredient, 37% of Sorona® is being made from renewable resources. This marks the first time that a luxuriously soft carpet offers durability, and stain protection while also making less of an environmental impact. The carpet is environmentally smart because:

The production of Sorona® polymer requires 30% less energy than the production of an equal amount of nylon.

Greenhouse gas emissions from the production of Sorona® are 63% lower than nylon manufacturing.

The energy reduction results in approximately one gallon of gasoline saved per every seven square yards of carpet.

The superior stain resistance is engineered into the fiber and will never wear or wash off so the consumer will never need to retreat the carpet after steam cleaning.

This engineered-in stain resistance reaches new levels of protection allowing tough stains such as bleach, mustard, red wine, and soft drinks to be removed simply with warm water and a mild detergent. The fiber even resists discoloration from bleach.
